When you were preparing to send your kids back to school, you certainly remembered the new backpack, matching lunchbox, notebooks, and pencils, but did you think about their smile? Parents spend time finding the perfect back to school outfit for their kid without even realizing their smile might not be ready to go. According to the CDC, nearly 20% of children ages 2-19 have untreated tooth decay. At Providence Dental Spa, our team wants to help you support your children in developing healthy dental habits, which will last a lifetime and keep their smile picture-perfect.

  • Schedule a Check-up—If your child has not had their bi-annual checkup, go ahead and schedule their appointment. Dental examinations are just as important as having their check-up at the pediatrician’s office. There are many medical conditions which can be caught through routine care. Also, we can talk to you about fluoride treatments and sealants, which may be a wise plan for supporting your child’s dental health.
  • Skip the Sugary Snacks—Your kids probably would prefer you did not see this tip. Since your child will be unlikely to brush while at school, a sugary snack will be allowed to sit on their teeth all day long. Ideally, packing healthy snacks, such as carrots, celery, and cubed cheese, would be better for their teeth and health in general. Send your love through a sweet note instead of the sweet treat.
  • Amp up the Fun—Kids need to be in the habit of brushing their teeth at least twice a day for approximately two minutes. Time only goes by quickly when you are having fun. Find ways to make the experience more fun for them. Try a fun song, let them pick out their toothbrush, get a toothbrush with sounds, or reward them with a sticker each time. Also, do not forget to encourage flossing each night. Good habits are more easily established when your children are young.

If your child needs to come in for their check-up, call today to schedule an appointment at Providence Dental Spa. We are ready to help your kiddos start off the school year with a smile.
