What is Scaling & Root Planing?

At general cleanings, hygienists scale and polish your teeth and gums to avoid tartar and plaque causing further damage. In some cases, gum disease can already go beyond the surface and require a scaling and root planing. The scaling and root planing process is a non-surgical solution for periodontal disease. Scaling and root planing cleans thoroughly below the gum line, encourages root health, and combats gum recession.

Step 1

Manage comfort levels.

Since your gums are likely already tender, we work carefully to manage any pain from the process. Using a local anesthetic, your teeth and gums will be prepared and numbed.

Remove hidden buildup.

With surgical-like precision, we will remove all plaque and tartar build up which has slipped below the gum line. We will ensure the pocket below the gum line is clear to prevent further discomfort or disease.

Step 3

Encourage healthy roots.

With periodontal diseases, gums and teeth can lose their ideal connection. Gum tissue is meant to hug teeth closely. At this stage, we will carefully smooth out the roots to encourage your gums and teeth to restore their closeness. Smoothing roots will also discourage bacteria, tartar, or plaque from reattaching to the gum line and causing further detriment.

Step 4

Schedule a follow-up.

After the cleaning process is complete, we will set up an appointment to examine your gums. If the issue has been dealt with, your gums should already be showing improvement both in appearance and tenderness.

Check on your gums.

At your follow-up, we will determine whether further intervention is necessary. If your gum problems have not been dealt with sufficiently, we will discuss the next steps for treating your gums.
